What Can I Do With My License?

Now that we have a basic knowledge of what cosmetology is, we can see just what the world of beauty can offer you. There are many things you can do with a cosmetology license, and while some may require additional education, they are all exciting opportunities. Here is our list of just some of the potential paths you can take.

Hairstylist or Barber

We commonly associate hairstyling with cosmetology, which is why it’s one of the more popular choices for those with cosmetology licenses. Hair stylists know the ins and outs of hair care and can learn the skills to create and maintain hairstyles for their clients. In addition to cutting, coloring, and styling hair, a stylist may educate their clients about hair and scalp care. Many people enjoy this job because it helps others look and feel their best. Some hairstylists can build strong friendships with their clients and can be very social in their day-to-day life.

Some cosmetologists prefer the more technical side of haircutting and choose to specialize in barbering. Barbers reflect a lot of what hairstylists do, but specialize mainly in men’s haircuts and styling. This can include beard trimming/shaving, specialized haircuts, and facials. Our barbering expansion course combines what you can learn in barbering school with more cosmetology information. A barbering license is required for this course.

Skin Care

The Kansas Board of Cosmetology allows licensed cosmetologists to perform the “cleansing, stimulating or performing any other noninvasive beautifying process on any skin surface by means of hands or mechanical or electrical appliances, other than electric needles, provided for esthetic rather than medical purposes.” This includes make-up application and temporary hair removal that does not use electric needles. These services must be purely cosmetic, as opposed to medically necessary.

If you’re passionate about skin care, becoming an esthetician may be the right path for you. Doing so will require additional classes outside of your cosmetology hours, as there are skills estheticians specialize in that cosmetologists do not. Makeup Artist

Some cosmetologists may choose to follow their dreams of makeup artistry. This involves using cosmetics to alter or accentuate the appearance of the face and body. In this field, you’ll use tools like applicators, eyebrow shapers, sponges, lip liners, and brushes to apply makeup, accentuate facial structure, or create stunning looks for various events. Makeup artists can work in a salon or freelance their services for special events like weddings or proms.

Nail Technician

Becoming a nail technician is a great way to express your creativity and artistry. In addition to creating beautiful nail art, nail technicians shape nails, groom cuticles, remove calluses and provide synthetic nail treatments. Manicurists are artists who can create ornate nail art. Whether it’s painting delicate flowers or adding sparkly gems, being a nail tech can give you a great opportunity to flex your creative muscles.

Where Can Cosmetologists Work?
